3 Lessons I've Learned from Trolls

November 02, 20221 min read

How can a feminist business deal with the trolls they'll inevitably face on the internet?

From 2017-2019, I managed social media for Women's March Canada and had to develop a pretty thick skin. With a degree in linguistics, I've also seem to have an ability to see patterns in language.

Don't feed the trolls!

Here are three lessons I've learned with dealing with trolls on social media:

  1. Anything after a "but" on social media completely negates what came before. this type of comment is an attempt to pacify and to centre oneself. It's an attempt at misdirection.

  2. Anyone using a "lol", or laughter emoji of any kind, in response to a post about racism, sexism or misogyny is a red flag. These individuals get an immediate block. Do not engage. You can't change their minds and they will never be your customer.

  3. The only time, if you have time, to engage with a troll is on another feminist's post to boost their engagement. Feed the algorithm, not the troll.

Trolls want attention. Don't give it to them. Give your attention to who you are solving problems for and is enthusiastic about what you do. This type of person will be your champion!

What lessons have you learned about playing nice on social media?
